Sunverters®
for Photovoltaic Applications
|

|
Cogenerates
power into utility lines for Residential, Industrial, Government and
Utility Installations.
These
inverters have a power range from 5 kW for residential use to
150 kW for commercial centers. The unit converts the wide range of
DC voltages from a photovoltaic array to a precise AC voltage and applies
the power to the utility line. No storage device, such as a battery,
is needed. If more power is produced than is being consumed locally,
the power is then supplied to the utility grid.
This product family
is also available for
stand-alone
applications.

Hybrid
Applications |
|
The
TRIMODE power processor product line includes a DC-DC Max
Power Tracker (MPT) which can be ordered separately; a Power
Processing controller (PPC) for a hybrid system that includes an
industrial size battery, an inverter / sine wave battery
charger, a diesel engine generator, and a Ground Fault
Detector System.
The MPT converts power
from a photovoltaic array to a battery hybrid power center. Its
function is to operate the photovoltaic array at its maximum power
point whenever the battery can take the power, and to operate as a
constant voltage DC power supply at the battery float voltage
whenever the battery is fully charged. At the float voltage point,
power may or may not be delivered to the 480 VAC grid depending on
whether the TRIMODE power processor is in the inverter mode or not.
The PPC optimizes the
use of photovoltaic energy and minimizes the consumption of diesel
fuel by managing when the diesel engine generator will supply the AC
grid and when the inverter will supply the AC grid.
Large scale integration
and the speed of response of sampled-date controller's lead to low
parts count and increased reliability. In
the Abacus Controls system design there is always isolation between
the DC source circuit and the AC output. Therefore, the
requirement for a ground fault detector is limited to safety issues on
the DC source. The ground Fault detector senses a ground in a
photovoltaic array by measuring the current to ground through the
normal array-grounding resistor. If the current exceeds a
predetermined level, the array is short-circuited and the fault
annunciated.

System
Description |
|
The
TRIMODE Power Processor optimizes power flow in hybrid
generator systems that have photovoltaic arrays, batteries and a
diesel generator. It operates in three modes -
First,
it may operate as an inverter providing power from the batteries to
the load with the diesel generator turned off.
Second,
it may operate as a battery charger delivering power from the diesel
generator. Third,
it operates in parallel with the diesel generator to provide a
bumpless transfer and to augment the total power available.
The Power Processing Center
(PPC) - The 480 VAC
three-phase grid can be serviced either from the diesel engine
generator or the three-phase TRIMODE power Processor.
The Alternate energy source is
the photovoltaic array. At the output of the array is a
rectifier, whose function is to block reverse power flow into the
array from the battery - a vital protection for array.
Interfacing between the array
and the battery is an optional DC-DC Max Power Tracker (MPT).
Considering the rated power of the system components and the broad
range of the operating voltage for both the photovoltaic array and the
battery; the economics of the system cost easily justify the added
purchase cost of the MPT. An added advantage of including the
MPT in the system is that the on-off controller for the battery is no
longer needed.
The Power Processor
Controller (PPC) keeps record on the status of the array, the battery,
and the diesel engine generator and delivers start / stop commands to
the diesel; Whenever the diesel is supplied power through the SS
Relay, the TRIMODE automatically goes into the charger mode.
The most desirable mode of
operation is with the array supplying power via the | |
